I started lecturing this subject called "Linear Algebra and Analytic Geometry" and in the second day of class I was approached by an undergrad student, asking for referenced that would contain "hard" exercises. I understand that the ones on the book I'm mostly following might seem pretty basic, since they aim for more "average" students by the way, this is in Brazil. I checked on this student's profile and noticed that she has actually received some medals on Brazil's Olympiads of Mathematics for teenagers. I do not want to lose this student to get bored with her first experience with University-level Mathematics her graduation subject is Computer Science , and since she said she'd have no problem with an english or spanish textbook, I would like to ask my fellow Stackers for textbooks that contain above-average exercises on Linear Algebra and Analytic Geometry.

Linear Algebra Supplement to Calculus With Analytic Geometry

Linear algebra is the branch of mathematics concerning linear equations such as. Linear algebra is central to almost all areas of mathematics. For instance, linear algebra is fundamental in modern presentations of geometry , including for defining basic objects such as lines , planes and rotations. Also, functional analysis may be basically viewed as the application of linear algebra to spaces of functions. Linear algebra is also used in most sciences and engineering areas, because it allows modeling many natural phenomena, and efficiently computing with such models.

Notation can be unusual and awkward especially if the Einstein summation convention is used , definitions can be imprecise, and theorems may not always be supported by proof. Michael Spivak, in volume 5 of his five-volume magnum opus on differential geometry, once described the difficulties he had reading a derivation of the wave equation, and I remember thinking how elegantly he had described my own feelings on that subject:. There are lots of physics examples in this book including rotations, Minkowski spacetime and electromagnetism, Kepler motions and angular velocity but these enhanced the mathematical discussions rather than detracted from them. There were some occasional instances of strange terminology. But these were few, minor, and non-disruptive. The first six chapters concern basic sophomore-level linear algebra.

I am a freshmen student in mathematics at Moscow State University in Russia and I'm confused with placing the subject called "analytic geometry" into the system of mathematical knowledge if you will. We had an analytic geometry course in fall; now we are having a course in linear algebra and it seems like most of the facts from "analytic geometry" are proved in a much more systematic and easier manner quote from wikipedia "Linear algebra has a concrete representation in analytic geometry". Many of our progressive professors also think that analytic geometry should be eliminated from the curriculum to clear more space for a linear algebra course.
