Bitter rivals Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort have been voted the greatest hero and most evil villain of children's literature in a new survey to mark World Book Day. Six of the top ten heroes were female, including Katniss Everdeen of The Hunger Games and Roald Dahl's Matilda, despite concerns over the under-representation of women and girls in children's literature. The poll also showed that some characters remain memorable more than a century after their first appearance, with Little Women's Jo March and Anne of Green Gables' Anne Shirley both ranking highly, while Oliver Twist's Bill Sikes made the top ten villains. Kirsten Grant, director of World Book Day, told the BBC the results "show that classic characters and stories stay with us, no matter how long ago we read them". Women also dominated the list of ultimate baddies in children's literature, although the number one spot went to Harry Potter's nemesis. All in all, author JK Rowling seems to have quite the flair for crafting unforgettable villains, with two other characters from the series — sadistic teacher Dolores Umbridge and ruthless Death Eater Bellatrix Lestrange — in the top ten. When broken down by gender, the polls look slightly different.

On the big day itself, both the children and teachers thoroughly enjoyed dressing up as their favourite literary heroes and villains and there were assemblies and parades held on both sites so the brilliant costumes could be admired by all. In addition, dozens of excited children followed the fiendish Book Quiz Trail around the Norfolk House building and Bumper Book Swaps were held in each department where all of the children were able to choose a different book to take home. The children also enjoyed celebratory visits to see their buddies and it was lovely to see the older pupils reading and drawing with our younger children and sharing their love of reading together. This year we were also lucky enough to be visited by Stuart and Joby from Future Creative and they ran energetic and engaging Roald Dahl and David Walliams drama workshops for all of the children from Nursery up to Form 6. I would like to extend a huge and heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped to make our celebrations so magical and memorable for the children: to the incredibly enthusiastic teachers, dedicated parents who scoured eBay and second hand shops and stayed up til 1am creating costumes, visiting mums and dads, the Friends of Norfolk House who very kindly paid for the workshops and of course the children themselves for showing us just how much they love to read. So on that note, I feel that the best people to review the multitude of World Book Day events are the children themselves so please read on to find out more! Mrs Osborne.

World Book Day is upon us which can only mean one thing - an army of Mildred Hubbles , Harry Potters, Gruffalos and Grinches streaming through the school gates for a day of literature-based fun. Despite being in its 18th year, book-lovers are being as imaginative as ever when it comes to the all-important costume and posting their efforts on social media. We salute all the parents who made it through the seven stages of World Book Day costume crisis and delivered their children to school looking this brilliant. Not to mention the adults, who tackled the brief with even more gusto than some of the kids. Although, there has been some argument over whether Queen Elsa from Frozen should have featured at all.
