The play received enthusiastic critical reception. At the Laurence Olivier Awards , the London production received a record-breaking eleven nominations and won an again record-breaking nine awards, including Best New Play. In December , it was revealed that a stage play based on the Harry Potter series had been in development for around a year,  with the view to bringing it to the stage sometime in Rowling revealed that the play would "explore the previously untold story of Harry's early years as an orphan and outcast".
On Thursday night September 5 at around 10pm UK time, the Potter author posted a cryptic tweet alongside a black-and-white image of the stage play's design of the Dark Mark, the infamous symbol of Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters. Rowling wrote in the tweet: "Sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places HarryPotter CursedChild". Related: Harry Potter books removed from school due to containing 'real' curses and spells. However, although you might immediately be thinking the Cursed Child movie that's been talked about for ages is finally happening, that is, sadly, definitely not what Rowling is hinting at. Potter fan site Pottermore, aka the "digital heart of the wizarding world", put out a tweet about 30 minutes before Rowling's and shot down any rumours of a film.

The chaos started when the author clarified that the new story was NOT a prequel, as many fans thought. JK Rowling, as usual, showed her remarkable patience with any over-excitable online situations to clarify exactly what was being published on July Although the exclamation mark and her own use of upper case may imply a certain level of frustration. No such confusion over the huge level of fan feeling over the news that they would be able to buy the script, especially since so many missed out on tickets for the show. To be clear! This is absolutely delighting news," tweeted one.
