"1984" short quotes (G. Orwell's book)

Not only does this line introduce how intrusive Big Brother is on a Party member's life, but it alludes to "the place where there is no darkness". This is the slogan of the Party and appears throughout the novel. It is also an example of "doublethink", the act of believing contradicting ideas simultaneously.
