The Medieval Scapini Tarot by Scapini Luigi - AbeBooksIt's a wonderful deck with a very authentic Middle Ages feel and look to the card artwork. After recreating the missing cards from the 15th century Tarocchi decks to form the U. Games' reproduction of the Visconti-Sforza Tarot, Luigi Scapini was apparently inspired to create his own version of the Tarot in a similar genre. The resulting Medieval Scapini Tarot appears to be a very interesting blend of 15th century imagery and contemporary artwork. The dark, gold-and-bronze colors and realistic representations of the Visconti Sforza Tarot appear to juxtapose in stark, yet pleasant, contrast with the vivid colors and near-caricature additions of the artist. It is interesting to note that Scapini admits that, while painting the images for this deck, he had no knowledge of the "standard" interpretations of the individual cards.

The Major Arcana and court cards have gold backgrounds in the manner of fifteenth-century European decks. Both the Major and Minor Arcana include full scenes. In the Minors, symmetrical arrangements of the suit symbols provide composition around which the scenes are arranged. The depth of Scapini's art history expertise is evident in his lush settings and period costumes. Interesting details, and sometimes-humorous references, are cleverly imbedded in the artwork, with many of the cards depicting historical figures, for example, Rasputin as the Knight of Cups. Readers will easily relate to the universal situations revealed in the cards, for pleasurable and insightful readings. Medieval Scapini combines the traditional trumps of the early Italian style tarot with the more modern system of illustrating the pips, all in incredibly detailed artwork.

This deck is such a delight, and I came across it completely by accident. It features figures in 15th century ish attire, and is decidedly medieval in tone. And the figures depicted in the cards have so much personality it almost hurts me to look at them. One thing that makes this deck truly unique is the design of the Minor Arcana. Even though this is a TdM deck, Scapini has painstakingly illustrated all of the Minor Arcana with vivid scenes. Here are a few more pictures.
