When you look at the new and different entries within the Surface line though , it becomes much harder to decide which is best. To try and nail it down, we pitted the Surface Pro 6 versus the Surface Book 2 and compared them on design, performance, and portability. Since both devices have detachable keyboards, they are each incredibly light during tablet-mode, with the Surface Book 2 somehow coming in ever so slightly lighter at 1.
Microsoft may be best known for its software, but the company has been working away studiously over the last few years, creating a range of laptops and tablets that marry serious specs with desirable design. Alcantra cloth keyboard, anyone? Which is Surface best for you? As ever, it depends on your particular needs and budget. The Surface Laptop is best for students or general work purposes. If you need more power, for creative work such as graphic design, then the Surface Book is best. If you want a more portable device you'll primarily use as a tablet, the Surface Go is the best value choice, while the Surface Pro 6 gives you more hardware horsepower at a higher cost.

But it's the Surface Book 2 that sits at the top of the Surface product line-up OK, so there's the professional-grade Surface Studio desktop, too. And yes, we know there's the Surface Go as well, but that's not a pro-level device. So how do the three pro-level Surface portables compare? All three devices aren't changed much in terms of design from their predecessors, with the changes mostly taking place under the hood. Surface Book 2 did include a USB-C port on the outside of the enclosure, but the other two devices don't. Like its predecessor, Microsoft Surface Pro 6 has a new hinge system on the kickstand, which allows it to be used in Surface Studio mode. In other words, it can lay flat.
